Chasing the Dragon

This mermaid enchantress sits in her private koi pond enjoying the warmth of a summer's night. The frogs sing their evening song while fireflies dance in a gentle breeze. She's one of my four contributions to Mermay, a month of mermaids, in 2017. This year I wanted to create a mermaid that represented each of the four main elements; earth, air, fire, and water. She represents the element of fire, shown here, smoking opium the way they used to in the early 19th century. The title "Chasing the Dragon" is the slang term used for smoking opium, and was partially inspired by the song of the same title by the Dutch metal group, Epica.
